Homemade Popcorn

If you're a popcorn lover like me, finding the perfect popcorn popper is more than just about convenience — it's about flavor, health, and quality. Our family loves popcorn as a fun snack, or evening treat for movie nights. But, as I am sure you know, the microwave popcorn we grew up on is not an option for my family because of the added chemicals and ingredients.  It's not that movie theater-style popcorn in a bag isn't great popcorn in taste, but what if there was a way to create the same taste making homemade popcorn?

Ingredients

  • ¼ cup kernels organic, non-GMO
  • 2-3 tbsp organic coconut oil (or avocado oil or EVOO)
  • salt to taste (preferably sea salt or Himalayan pink salt for a mineral boost)
  • Optional toppings (such as organic butter, nutritional yeast, or your favorite seasoning)

Method

  1. Place your stainless steel popcorn maker on the stovetop. Make sure the lid is vented and the stir paddle is properly in place.
  2. Add 2-3 tablespoons of organic coconut oil (or avocado oil) into the popcorn maker. You only need a little oil. Turn the heat to medium-high and allow the oil to melt and heat up for about 2-3 minutes. To test if the oil is hot enough, drop in 2 or 3 kernels. When they pop, the oil is ready.
  3. Once the oil is hot, add 1/4 cup of organic popcorn kernels to the popcorn maker. Close the lid and start stirring gently to coat the kernels evenly with oil.
  4. Keep stirring the kernels with the paddle to prevent burning and ensure even popping. You’ll start to hear the kernels popping after 2-3 minutes. Keep stirring regularly, and the popping should be rapid.
  5. Once the popping slows down to a few seconds between pops, it’s time to remove the popcorn maker from the heat. Be careful not to leave it on too long, as overcooked kernels can burn.
  6. Immediately after popping, open the lid carefully (watch for steam) and pour your fresh popcorn into a large serving bowl. While still warm, sprinkle with your preferred sea salt or Himalayan pink salt. You can also melt some organic butter or drizzle olive oil over the top for extra flavor.
  7. If you like, sprinkle your popcorn with nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor or add some herbs and spices like garlic powder, paprika, or cinnamon for a savory or sweet twist
