My Popcorn Popper

If you’re a popcorn lover like me, finding the perfect popcorn popper is more than just about convenience — it’s about flavor, health, and quality. Our family loves popcorn as a fun snack, or evening treat for movie nights. But, as I am sure you know, the microwave popcorn we grew up on is not an option for my family because of the added chemicals and ingredients.  It’s not that movie theater-style popcorn in a bag isn’t great popcorn in taste, but what if there was a way to create the same taste making homemade popcorn?

In my quest to find the best way to make the best-tasting popcorn, I’ve discovered that there are a few factors involved.  When it comes to popcorn poppers or the best popcorn makers, I have decided that stainless steel reigns supreme. Let me walk you through the importance of choosing stainless steel, the best organic non-GMO kernels to pick, and help walk you through your first batch of homemade popcorn using your popcorn machine

The Best Option for Healthy Popcorn

When preparing popcorn at home, the material of your popper matters more than you might think. Did you know that plastic and non-stick coatings of the electric models can sometimes release harmful chemicals when heated, and over time, these can leach into your food? This is where stainless steel comes in. As you know from me talking about pots and pans, stainless steel is non-toxic!  It is not only durable, but it can also withstand the high temperatures of popcorn popping without releasing any harmful substances. It’s the safest choice for anyone looking to make popcorn at home without worrying about any unhealthy chemicals.

Because I know I can trust stainless steel in the kitchen to provide me with non toxic kitchenware, I knew that the best popcorn popper out there for my family was going to be made of the same material.  I wanted something with easy cleanup, a long handle, and one where I could use and experiment with the stove-top methods. Traditional stovetop poppers are made of stainless steel, so it was an easy find for me!  Plus, the stovetop models provide a fun experience while making the popcorn and amazingly actually make fluffy popcorn!

My Popcorn Maker

My favorite popcorn maker I have found is the Great Northern Popcorn Popper with the traditional hand crank, vented lid, and stir paddle.  It is made from high-quality stainless steel, which I know ensure that each batch of popcorn is popped to perfection with no worries about toxic materials.

I also love that it lets you control the stirring of the kernels manually.  This method allows you to make sure the kernels don’t burn and are evenly coated with oil or seasoning.

The vented lid is another thoughtful design feature. It allows steam to escape, preventing moisture buildup, which means you get crispy popcorn rather than soggy kernels. If you’ve ever made popcorn in a standard pot, you know how important this is!

And the stir paddle is what really takes this popper to the next level. It helps to keep the kernels moving, ensuring that they pop evenly and efficiently. No more unpopped kernels or burnt popcorn — just the best batch of freshly popped goodness.

Why Choose Organic, Non-GMO Popcorn Kernels

Ok, so now that I’ve convinced you about stainless steel, let’s talk about the quality of your popcorn kernels, which is just as important! If you’re going to the trouble of investing in a high-quality popper, you should also make sure you’re using the best ingredients. That’s where organic, non-GMO popcorn kernels come into play.

Organic popcorn is grown without the use of synthetic pesticides or fertilizers, which means it’s better for both your health and the environment. And by choosing non-GMO kernels, you’re supporting natural farming practices that avoid genetically modified organisms, which can be harmful to both your health and biodiversity.  I also love that organic kernels also tend to have a more robust and natural flavor compared to their conventional counterparts. Here are some options I found when looking for organic, non-GMO popcorn kernels.

Homemade Popcorn Recipe

Making popcorn on the stovetop with a stainless steel popcorn maker is a fun and easy way to enjoy fresh, tasty popcorn. Here’s a recipe you can follow using clean ingredients.

Ingredients

  • 1/4 cup of kernels–organic popcorn kernels (ensure they are non-GMO)
  • 2-3 tablespoons organic coconut oil (or avocado oil or EVOO)
  • Salt (preferably sea salt or Himalayan pink salt for a mineral boost)
  • Optional toppings (such as organic butter, nutritional yeast, or your favorite seasoning)

Instructions

  1. Prep Your Popcorn Maker–Place your stainless steel popcorn maker on the stovetop. Make sure the lid is vented and the stir paddle is properly in place.
  2. Heat the Oil–Add 2-3 tablespoons of organic coconut oil (or avocado oil) into the popcorn maker. You only need a little oil. Turn the heat to medium-high and allow the oil to melt and heat up for about 2-3 minutes. To test if the oil is hot enough, drop in 2 or 3 kernels. When they pop, the oil is ready.
  3. Add the Popcorn Kernels–Once the oil is hot, add 1/4 cup of organic popcorn kernels to the popcorn maker. Close the lid and start stirring gently to coat the kernels evenly with oil.
  4. Pop the Popcorn–Keep stirring the kernels with the paddle to prevent burning and ensure even popping. You’ll start to hear the kernels popping after 2-3 minutes. Keep stirring regularly, and the popping should be rapid.
  5. Listen for the Popping to Slow Down–Once the popping slows down to a few seconds between pops, it’s time to remove the popcorn maker from the heat. Be careful not to leave it on too long, as overcooked kernels can burn.
  6. Season the Popcorn–Immediately after popping, open the lid carefully (watch for steam) and pour your fresh popcorn into a large serving bowl. While still warm, sprinkle with your preferred sea salt or Himalayan pink salt. You can also melt some organic butter or drizzle olive oil over the top for extra flavor.
  7. Optional Topping–If you like, sprinkle your popcorn with nutritional yeast for a cheesy flavor or add some herbs and spices like garlic powder, paprika, or cinnamon for a savory or sweet twist.

Serve your freshly popped, popcorn right away and enjoy a crunchy, healthy snack!

Tips

  • If you like your popcorn with a little sweetness, you can drizzle a little maple syrup or honey over it after popping for the perfect amount of sweetness.
  • Experiment with your favorite seasonings like chili powder or dried rosemary for new popcorn flavors and combinations.
