Why Go Toxin-Free?

We all want to feel good, to have energy, and to know we’re doing what we can to care for ourselves and our families. A toxin-free home plays a surprisingly powerful role in that.

Our homes are where we spend the majority of our time—especially now, with remote work and more home-centered lifestyles, and for us as we homeschool! Yet, did you know that modern homes and our every day home environment are often filled with synthetic materials and chemicals that can affect our hormones, immune systems, respiratory health, and even mental clarity?

Common culprits include:

  • Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) from paint, air fresheners, and cleaning products
  • Phthalates and parabens in personal care items from our bathrooms to all the plastics in our kitchen and pantry
  • PFAS (so-called “forever chemicals”) in nonstick cookware and water-resistant fabrics
  • Formaldehyde in furniture, flooring, and even baby products
  • Flame retardants in mattresses, sofas, and electronics

Exposure to these toxins over time may contribute to issues like allergies, asthma, fatigue, skin irritation, hormone disruption, and in some cases, more serious long-term health risks.

The good news? You don’t need to throw everything out or spend a fortune to make your home healthier. Small, informed choices really do add up—and you don’t have to go it alone.  Our family over time have intentionally been switching and choosing better.  Like you, this is a learned process, and I am happy you don’t have to do it alone!

Progress Over Perfection

It’s easy to feel overwhelmed once you start uncovering what’s really in your stuff. But this journey is not about fear or guilt. It’s about awarenesschoice, and progress.

We’re all doing our best with what we know. And the moment we learn more, we can start making better decisions. That doesn’t mean tossing every product you own overnight. In fact, the most sustainable approach is a gradual one—swapping things out as they run out or as budget allows.

That’s exactly what inspired me to create the Intentional Home Guide: a thoughtful, no-pressure companion that breaks down your home room by room, category by category, with practical toxin-free swaps that you can implement at your own pace.  I also include affordable suggestions that I also think helps make the switch more manageable.  I have spent years finding products that can support the toxic-free lifestyle that I can suggest to you, products that I love and use!

Starting the Journey: Where to Begin

If this is all new to you, take a deep breath. You don’t need to do everything at once. The goal is progress, not perfection, remember?  Even reading this post is progress because it means you care enough to figure out next steps!

Here are a few practical first steps:

Start with Air Quality–The air inside our homes is often more polluted than outdoor air due to off-gassing and poor ventilation.
Simple, easy, affordable tips:

  • Open windows regularly to circulate fresh air
  • Use air-purifying houseplants (like peace lilies, spider plants, and snake plants)
  • Add an air purifier to high-traffic or sleeping areas–We LOVE our Air Doctor, but there are more budget friendly, quality air purifiers out there!

Upgrade Cleaning Products–This is one of the most impactful areas to start. Many conventional cleaners contain chemicals linked to respiratory and skin irritation.
Try:

  • Replacing all-purpose cleaner with a safe, biodegradable version or one made with natural products
  • Swapping dryer sheets for wool dryer balls
  • Using white vinegar and baking soda for a natural cleaning boost

Switch Out Plastic–Plastics, especially those labeled #3, #6, and #7, often contain BPA or other endocrine disruptors.
Try:

  • Replacing plastic food containers with glass or stainless steel
  • Avoiding plastic wrap and opting for beeswax wraps
  • Using silicone bags instead of disposable sandwich bags

Focus on Daily Use Items–Think about what you put on your skin and use daily.
Consider:

  • Cleaner hand soap, body lotion, and deodorant
  • Toothpaste without fluoride or sulfates
  • Makeup and skincare without parabens, talc, or synthetic fragrance

Each of these changes reduces your exposure and builds momentum for the next shift. This journey is yours—do it your way, and know that every step matters.

Toxin-Free Living Is About Empowerment

Living toxin-free doesn’t mean fearfully avoiding everything. It means making educated, aligned choices about what we allow into our sacred spaces. It means choosing wellness, peace of mind, and greater alignment with our values.

What I’ve learned through this process—and what I hope to share with you—is that your home has the power to support your health in ways you may not have realized before. And that it doesn’t have to be complicated or overwhelming. The Intentional Home Guide is here to help. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach, and that’s the beauty of it. You get to create a home that feels right for you, and you get to choice what works best for you in whatever stage of life you find yourself.

As a homeschool mom of three energetic boys, this journey toward a toxin-free home has been deeply personal for me. Over the years, we’ve made small, intentional shifts—one product, one room, one habit at a time. It hasn’t been perfect, and it definitely hasn’t happened overnight, but every choice has added up to a home that feels more aligned with our values and more supportive of our health. My hope is that the Intentional Home Guide helps you feel empowered, not overwhelmed, and reminds you that you don’t have to do it all at once. You’re already doing so much—and with the right support, creating a healthier home is absolutely within reach. We’re all learning and growing together, and I’m so grateful to walk this path alongside you.

Please remember that creating a toxin-free home isn’t about perfection—it’s about intention. It’s about tuning into the things that matter, listening to your body, and honoring your environment. It’s about realizing that small shifts really do make a big difference, especially when compounded over time.  If you’re feeling inspired, curious, or even a little overwhelmed, you’re not alone—and you’re not behind.
