The Best Non-Toxic Cleaning Products and Why Choosing Less Toxic Is Better for Your Family

In recent years, there has been a significant shift in how we view household cleaning products. Once regarded as simply “necessary tools” for maintaining a tidy home, cleaning products have become subjects of greater scrutiny, especially with increasing awareness about their potential health risks and the endocrine disruption in so many of our personal care items.

Many conventional cleaning products contain harmful chemicals that can affect the air we breathe, the surfaces we touch, and ultimately our health—particularly that of our children, pets, and those with sensitivities–this is why we have slowly switched.  I talk more about all of this in my Holistic Homemakers Guide to Cleaning (check it out HERE). This is why more and more families are making the conscious choice to go non-toxic when it comes to cleaning their homes. Non-toxic cleaning products are not only safer for the environment, but also much better for our health. Here’s a look at the best non-toxic cleaning products I have seen and enjoyed, and also why making the switch is an important step toward a healthier home.

Why Choosing Non-Toxic is Better for Your Family

  • Healthier Indoor Air Quality—Traditional cleaning products often contain volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that can linger in the air and contribute to indoor air pollution. Prolonged exposure to these chemicals can lead to respiratory issues, skin irritation, headaches, and more. By opting for non-toxic cleaners, you’re reducing the exposure to these harmful fumes, creating a cleaner, healthier indoor environment.  I also love using my Air Doctor to help also cut down on VOCs in our home.  But I do think that changing cleaning products is also a huge help!
  • Safer for Children and Pets—Children and pets are particularly vulnerable to the chemicals in conventional cleaning products because they are closer to the ground, more likely to put things in their mouths, and often have developing immune systems like my growing boys! Many traditional cleaners contain ingredients that are harmful when ingested or inhaled, such as ammonia, bleach, and phthalates. I know these things make us “feel” like things are cleaner, but really they are dangerous to our health.  Don’t let the nostalgia of clean get you!  Non-toxic cleaning products are generally free of these dangerous substances, making them a much safer choice for households with little ones and furry friends.  And guess what?  More non-toxic cleaning products actually smell wonderful and clean!
  • Gentler on Your Skin —Exposure to harsh cleaning chemicals can cause skin irritation, rashes, or burns. With non-toxic, plant-based products, you can avoid these skin problems, as these cleaners are formulated with natural ingredients that are gentle yet effective.
  • Environmental Impact—Many conventional cleaning products contribute to environmental pollution. They often contain chemicals that are toxic to wildlife and can harm ecosystems when washed down the drain. Many non-toxic cleaners, on the other hand, tend to use biodegradable ingredients that are safer for the planet and less likely to pollute water systems, which I am so happy about!  Helping the environment while living clean?  Yes, please.
  • Reducing Chemical Load in Your Home—The average household uses a wide variety of cleaning products—each containing different chemicals. Over time, the cumulative exposure to these chemicals can take a toll on your health, particularly in a home where cleaning is frequent. Non-toxic cleaning products provide peace of mind, knowing that your family isn’t being constantly exposed to potentially harmful substances.
